If you got the chance to see the holiday affairs programme ‘Don’t Be Done In The Sun’ on BBC1 yesterday, you will have witnessed several holiday heartache stories from disabled travellers.
Once again we heard sorry tales from people with reduced mobility who had booked their holidays with mainstream tour operators who had then failed to make the appropriate arrangements to ensure specific flight and holiday requirements.
Despite booking what was supposed to be a disabled-friendly hotel in Menorca, a family of three were horrified by their findings – especially after forking out almost £3,500 for their dream holiday. Amongst their discoveries were makeshift wooden planks acting as ramps for steps, a bathroom door that was too narrow to accept the wife’s wheelchair, and a multitude of non-accessible facilities.
One poor pensioner from Porthcawl didn’t receive the assistance he was promised when flying to Malta with Ryanair - despite checking all would be okay beforehand. When making a complaint to his agent upon returning home, he was told no special requests had been made and the aircraft had a full allocation of disabled travellers before his boarding. Oh dear.
Then there was the case of a group of four relatives (two of which were severely disabled) who had booked adjoining rooms in a ‘so called accessible’ hotel in Turkey. They were looking forward to having a great time together but found nothing but disappointments. Instead of adjoining rooms they found themselves in different blocks, with the disabled couple on the top floor! Marble staircases were everywhere and the main hotel facilities were a good 10-minute walk away.
