Accessible Holidays in Madeira

Madeira is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Atlantic’ and boasts a warm climate year-round because of its location on the African Plate, a major equatorial tectonic plate.

Despite its mountainous persona, Madeira is a surprisingly wheelchair-friendly destination.  Many of the island’s new buildings have been designed with those with limited mobility in mind, including restaurants and bars.  However, even though accessibility is constantly improving in Madeira, it still may be an idea to pack an extra cushion if you are a wheelchair user to ensure a comfortable journey across the attractive cobblestones.

The island itself is outstandingly beautiful with postcard beaches, a wonderful array of flora and fauna and a sub-tropical climate with average summer temperatures of a warm 23°c in August and very little rainfall.

Madeira is full of accessible activities and attractions. Places of interest in Funchal, the island’s capital, include the ancient cathedral, theatre, town hall and attractive waterfront. The island’s cable car has been fitted with wheelchair access facilities, so you can take in some of the island’s most amazing views. Enable Holidays is also able to provide many accessible tours, including the incredible Laurissilva Forest, where the wheelchair-friendly trail leads you to views of some of the most stunning landscapes on the island.
