The ex-fishing village of Playa del Carmen is now the third-largest city in Quintana Roo, with a population of over 150,000 and a reputation as a trendy, attractive holiday destination.
The resort's clear waters have made it famous as a top diving spot, and the local accessible diving opportunities make exploring the deep blue and the colourful sea life an experience available to just about everyone.
The temperature and humidity does ride quite high during the summer months, so the best time to visit tends to be in April or May, which also quite handily avoids Mexico's hurricane season!
