I’ve just returned from a part-work, part-holiday visit to Gibraltar, and I was genuinely impressed by how welcoming and accessible this compact destination is for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that Gibraltar has made real strides in inclusion — I noticed many people confidently navigating the streets on scooters and chairs, which immediately set a positive tone.
The Main Street area, lined with shops and cafés, is completely pedestrianised and ideal for exploring independently. The marina is another highlight — modern, level, and dotted with restaurants that offer lovely outdoor seating and sea views. It’s a great place to relax and people-watch, and the friendly locals add to the charm.
I stayed two nights at The Eliott Hotel, which has a sloped entrance and accessible toilets both in reception and by the pool area. The Sunborn floating hotel moored in the marina was another highlight — ultra modern, incredibly accessible, with level access throughout, and just a short, flat walk from the airport. My cabin even overlooked both the runway and marina!
The highlight of my trip was visiting Gibraltar’s World War II Tunnels. Here you are taken on a journey back in time to reveal the Rock’s strategic military past. The attraction benefits from extensive refurbishment work, modern digital experiences, and being accessible to wheelchair and mobility-scooter users as well visitors with trained assistance dogs.
If you are able to access the Rock, the attraction is surprisingly accessible and absolutely captivating — a must-see for history lovers. Gibraltar’s compact size, year-round sunshine, and direct, affordable flights with easyJet make it perfect for a summer or winter short break, especially for mature travellers looking for somewhere easy to explore yet full of character and history.
It’s a destination I’ll definitely be recommending — accessible, friendly, and full of interest in every sense.
