A Late Summer Escape to the Sun Beach Resort, Ialyssos, Rhodes

If Rhodes is calling your name, Sun Beach Resort in Ialyssos might just be the answer. From smooth airport transfers to sparkling pools and great accessibility for travellers with reduced mobility, here’s a friendly and concise overview following my recent visit.

Airport Arrival & Transfer

Our Rhodes adventure began with an incredibly efficient airport experience – both at East Midlands in the UK and Rhodes airport. From there, it was a nifty 15-minute transfer in a luxurious Mercedes. No stress. No fuss. Just the holiday mode kicking in early.

First Impressions: Sun Beach Resort

The moment we arrived the hotel set a great tone.

Beautifully maintained topiary gardens welcome you into a bright, spacious entrance. Ramp access is clearly visible, with a marked yellow safety zone for wheelchair-users – thoughtful and reassuring.

Inside, the reception area is impressive. Think pristine, modern design with marble-style floors that run throughout the hotel. Everything feels clean, airy, and stylish.

Check-in couldn’t have been easier. The reception team were warm, professional, and clearly explained everything we needed to know. Five stars there.

Room with a View

Rooms are of a genuinely high standard – comfortable, modern and well-appointed.

Ours looked out over manicured grounds leading straight to the sea. Waking up to that every day? Yes, please!

Poolside Bliss

There’s no shortage of places to swim or soak up the Greek sunshine.

Main pool – Spacious, with plenty of loungers (though bear in mind it was end of season).

Adult-only infinity pool – Calm, stylish, Roman-style steps leading down for easy entry.

Kids’ pool area – including a splash pool complete with small slides for the little ones.

Lots of space, lots of sunshine, and lots of smiles.

Food & Facilities

The resort facilities as a whole are very good and well laid out.

The main restaurant boasts stunning sea views – providing the perfect backdrop for dining. The breakfasts were especially good, with an excellent choice of cooked and cold dishes to choose from. It was also noticeable just how attentive the staff were to ensure there was a constant supply of everything – from freshly cooked bacon, eggs and accompaniments to breads, cereals and cheeses.

Location & Beach Access

The location is truly hard to beat.

Sun Beach Resort sits right on the shoreline of Ialyssos. The beach itself is pebbly, but wooden wheelchair-accessible walkways weave through much of it, making wandering around easy enough. There are a few steps here and there, which can be navigated with care or a little support.

Accessibility

Sun Beach Resort shines when it comes to accessibility.

  • Smooth surfaces throughout
  • Ramps in all essential locations
  • Accessible apartments at ground level facing the beach

It’s especially good for those with limited mobility, and many other guests were enjoying that ease of movement. Apart from a couple of wheelchair-users, a good number of guests had limited mobility and were using walking aids quite confidently on the smooth, flat surfaces.

One small downside: the lifts are very compact.

Exploring Ialyssos

Just a short walk away, Ferenikis Street serves up a vibrant mix of restaurants, cafés, and small shops.

Top dining picks nearby:

  • Pezouli
  • Cosa Nostra
  • Kostas Village Taverna
  • Platon

All were accessible and offered great menu choices and large dollops of Greek hospitality.

Pavements are deep – very typical for Greece – but dropped kerbs and decent walkways help keep everything manageable.

Excursions

Symi Island was a real highlight. We boarded a two-tier speedboat-style yacht over to Symi’s colourful harbour. From there, the smaller Beach Runner took us to St. George’s Bay where there was an opportunity for those who were able to take a swim in stunning turquoise water – or for others plenty of time to soak up the beautiful views. It was then back to Symi harbour for a couple of hours exploring the beautiful town and enjoying a lunch of fresh seafood.

Prices for accessible boat trips to Symi range from €30–€75 – absolutely worth it.

Rhodes Town is an absolute must. A lovely mix of modern shops and medieval streets, with surprisingly accessible walkways even in the historic Old Town. Perfect for a day of sightseeing, shopping and being tempted by gyros and gelato.

Weather (21 – 27 October)

Mostly warm at 22–24°C, creeping slightly higher toward the end of the week.

We did get one dramatic downpour—about 15 minutes—followed by sunshine.

And one thunderstorm lit up the distant sky at night… an incredible natural show.

  • Excellent, friendly staff
  • Wonderful beachfront location
  • Loads of nearby restaurants
  • Smooth accessibility throughout
  • Great pools
  • Easy connections to Rhodes Town & Symi
  • Warm Greek hospitality
